Your 2am cheat sheet
Four steps for when the night falls apart
The short version of the audio, for when you can't listen and just need a reminder.
Pause, don't panic
A waking doesn't automatically mean something is wrong. Before changing anything, take a breath and ask what your baby is actually asking for right now.
- Hunger?
- Comfort?
- Connection?
- Help getting back to sleep?
- Discomfort?
You don't need to solve the whole problem at 2am.
Respond, but look at the pattern
If your baby needs comfort, it is right to respond. The aim is never to stop being responsive. Ask: what has become necessary for your baby to fall back to sleep?
- Feeding
- Rocking
- Cuddling
- Bouncing
- Holding
- Dummy replacement
- Co-sleeping
None of these are bad. But if the same thing is needed at every natural wake, it can become the pattern that keeps the night going.
Reset, don't change everything
When your baby wakes, choose one response. Try it calmly and consistently rather than doing five different things because the first didn't work immediately.
Respond, reassure, and help your baby learn to fall back to sleep a new way.
Remember daytime too
Night sleep doesn't exist in isolation. A baby with unbalanced daytime sleep will find it much harder to stay asleep at night.
- Naps
- How they settle
- Bedtime
- Daytime feeds
- Environment
Don't try to fix night wakings without looking at the whole picture.

"Words can’t even describe how amazing the help that Beth gave us with our baby girls sleep. Since 4 months old, we’ve coslept with Amelie waking throughout the night wanting a feed. Her day time sleep never hit over 1 hour either, napping for only 20 minutes a time. She’s now 7 months old. On the FIRST night with Beth, Amelie slept through in her own cot with one wake up for a feed. The first day, she slept for two 1 hour naps and a 30 minute nap. Every time she slept, WE had to wake her which has never, ever happened. We can now place Amelie in her cot when it’s time for her to sleep, and she’ll settle herself to sleep. My mental health as a mum is a million times better so much so my PPD is gone, my relationship with my partner is better as we now have our evenings back and in general, our quality of sleep is as it should be. Thank you so much Beth, you’ve truly been a life saver x"Mum of Amelie 7 months old
